"One of the reasons I am alive today is because of work done by volunteers and contributors to the American Cancer Society. Now that I can, it is my turn to give something back," says cancer survivor and event coordinator David Baumgarten. "A community music event is the perfect forum to bridge gaps between people of all ages and cultures Cancer effects us all. What better way to celebrate the richness of life than to share music, dance and laughter with friends?" Concert2Cure will be held the first quarter of 2001 at The Tabernacle, a historic concert venue located in downtown Atlanta that is donating the facility for the event. Musical guests include GuruFish, Theodis Ealey, The Breeze Kings and DueWest, performing a variety of musical styles from pop, jazz and funk to blues. Between sets, a comedy duo will perform a routine shedding light on testicular and breast self-examination. David adds, "People may have reactions to the comedy routine that range from rolling-on-the-floor-with laughter to being flat-out uncomfortable. Either way, all will go home educated, perhaps more comfortable touching their bodies, and hopefully, still laughing. The possibility that another life will have been saved is immense." A concerted effort will be made to promote early detection and prevention of cancer. Literature on cancer will be readily available to an estimated 2,500 participants. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 1.2 million Americans will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Approximately 1,500 people die each day of cancer in the US alone. One in two men and one in three women will likely be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
