The four women
of Jackpot City combine crunchy chainsaw guitar rock with lush
vocal harmonies and diverse instrumentation creating a unique
sound that dominates the local music scene in Athens, GA -- no
small feat given the city's international reputation for its music
scene. Jackpot City first came together in late 1997, each individual
member with an already impressive musical resume.
Mamie Fike
(vocals, violins, keyboards) was previously with the Chickasaw
Mudd Puppies and Asa Nisa Masa; both produced by R.E.M. frontman
Michael Stipe.
Kelly Noonan
(vocals, guitar, bass) runs a local recording studio, Suite Sixteen,
and is perhaps best known for her work with Billy James, produced
by R.E.M. member Mike Mills.
Kathy Kirbo
(vocals, guitar, bass) was previously with Purr and Greenhouse,
bands that were also produced by Mike Mills of R.E.M., Jeff Walls
of Guadalcanal Diary and Dave Barber of Sugar.
Alice Grayson
(drums, percussion) joined the band soon after her exodus from
Mobile, AL where she performed with A.M. Radio and Sugarfix.
Jackpot City's
catchy array of songs was quickly noticed by Widespread Panic
bassist, Dave Schools. After hearing the band play live, he decided
to produce their demo at the Athens-based studio of legendary
producer, John Keane -- known for his work with R.E.M., the Cowboy
Junkies, and the Indigo Girls to name just a few. Jackpot City
is currently working on a full-length self-produced, self-recorded
and self-engineered CD.
